Comcast Center – Attendance 17950

Maryland Big Upset over Duke 83-81 in what will be the last home ACC contest for the two teams at the University of Maryland before almost 18 thousand in attendance tonight. Undoubtedly this win goes down in history as one the biggest wins surpassing the win in 2010 upsetting then #4 Duke team led by Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez at the Comcast Center grabbing a first-place tie for the ACC regular-season title. That was the last time Maryland beat Duke before tonight. The memories of Terrapins past came home tonight. It wasn’t easy for the Terrapins given the ball over to the Blue Devils 27 times. When Maryland obtain a 10 point lead Duke was able to go on a 7-0 run but the Terrapins were playing at a different level tonight and did not let this take away from keeping the lead for most of the second half. Duke’s biggest lead was in the first half with 5 points while Maryland’s top lead was 10 points in the second half at 14:41 while the lead changed 10 time through out the game.

Alex Len had the game of his life tonight out playing Mason Plumlee in the paint and on the boards scoring 19 point grabbing 9 rebounds and made 3 block shots. Len in his second year showed maturity and strength using his 7ft 1 255lb frame to hold the Duke standout Center Plumlee to just 4 points , 3 rebound and foaled out late in the 2nd half.

Seth Allen (16 point, 2 rebounds) played the role vacated by suspended Pe’ Shon Howard by sinking the game sealer 2 free throws 2.8 seconds left in the game making the score 83-81 after being foaled by former Oak Hill Academy Standout Quin Cook who played 3 season for the DeMatha Staggs but in the summer of his senior year announced his transfer to Oak Hill where he graduated.

The students stormed the court dancing with delight as this is it. Even though Maryland will still play in the ACC next year the ACC is not scheduling games against the two Universities for the 2014 season.

Coach Turgeon and the young Maryland Basketball team discuss the crossroad Saturday looking for a big win over the 22-2 and 9-2 (ACC) Blue Devils as this game is more about the future of Maryland Basketball and not about Duke. Turgeon speaks briefly about Pe’Shon Howard not suiting up for the Duke game and possibly 2 or 3 other games as he is suspended by Coach Turgeon for violating team rules.

Maryland has 7 remaining ACC games on the schedule all will have a big impact on the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) the NCAA selection committee uses to select the field for the National Tournament. How Maryland response to the rest of the season will be the difference between a invite to the NCAA tournament or going to the NIT.

The University of Maryland athletics department will dedicate a bronze bas-relief of legendary basketball coach Charles “Lefty” Driesell in Comcast Center on April 16, 2013, director of athletics Kevin Anderson announced on February 12, 2013.

Driesell became Maryland’s head coach for the 1969-70 season with a promise for new excitement and to turn things around. Prior to his arrival, the Terrapins had won only one Atlantic Coast Conference title and made just once NCAA Tournament appearance.

In his 17 seasons at Maryland, Driesell compiled a 348-159 record, won one ACC title and led the Terps to eight NCAA Tournament appearances.

In addition to the bas-relief that will be unveiled on April 16, Driesell will be honored at Maryland’s home game vs. Clemson on Saturday, Feb. 23 at noon.

“Lefty is a legendary coach and we are happy to recognize him on this special day,” said Anderson. “It will be exciting for our longtime fans to celebrate Lefty’s return to the university and we look forward to the dedication of his Bas-relief in April.”

“Lefty did a great job establishing a tradition for Maryland basketball,” said men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon. “I know our alumni, former players, and our team is excited to have Lefty back on campus. It will be a great day for everyone involved with Maryland basketball.”

Driesell, who coached at Davidson prior to coming to Maryland and went on to stints at James Madison and Georgia State, compiled a 786-394 record in his 40-plus years as a head coach. He was the originator of “Midnight Madness” to open practice at the beginning of the season in 1971.

He is a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame, and is a nominee for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
